Japan and the US signed the US–Japan Trade Agreement and the US–Japan Digital Trade Agreement in Washington on October 7, 2019. The two governments had agreed on the deals in a joint statement on September 25. Both took effect on January 1, 2020.
Why it matters
The signing came while the US was threatening tariffs on Japanese cars under Section 232, and the agreements lowered that tension. They set the trade terms for Japanese companies investing in the US in the following years.
