In a joint statement, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Donald Trump agreed to begin negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement, known in Japan as the TAG. The statement included an understanding that the US would not impose new tariffs, such as on Japanese cars, while the talks were under way.
Why it matters
The truce on auto tariffs eased a major risk for Japanese automakers and parts makers producing in and exporting to the US.
