Trade ministers of Japan, the US and ten other Pacific Rim countries concluded negotiations on the Trans-Pacific Partnership in Atlanta. Chapter 9 of the agreement sets rules to protect cross-border investment. The US later withdrew from the agreement in 2017.
Why it matters
The deal would have set common investment protections between Japan and the US for the first time under a trade agreement. The later US withdrawal left the two countries to pursue separate bilateral talks.
