Toyota will invest $3.6 billion to add a second assembly line at its San Antonio plant, which already builds the Tundra and Sequoia. Production of the Tacoma pickup will shift there from Toyota's Baja California plant in Mexico over about four years. The project adds 2.5 million square feet and 2,000 jobs, taking the site to about 6,000 workers.
Why it matters
Moving a high-volume truck from Mexico to Texas cuts Toyota's exposure to US tariffs on imported vehicles. It brings Toyota's total investment in San Antonio to $8.3 billion since 2003.
The plan
Toyota announced on July 6, 2026 that it will add a second assembly line at its San Antonio plant, which builds the Tundra and Sequoia. The $3.6 billion project adds 2.5 million square feet and 2,000 jobs, doubling the site by 2030. It brings Toyota's total San Antonio investment since 2003 to about $8.3 billion.
Moving the Tacoma
The new line will build the Tacoma pickup, with production moving from Toyota's Baja California plant in Mexico over about four years. Toyota will keep building Tacomas at its Guanajuato plant in Mexico. San Antonio's city council approved about $143 million in incentives in June, tied to 2,000 jobs at or above the local average wage.
Toyota also called for a quick resolution of the review of the USMCA trade agreement.
