Toyota chose the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite in Liberty, North Carolina, for its first US car-battery plant, a joint venture with trading company Toyota Tsusho. The first phase was $1.29 billion with 1,750 jobs, starting with batteries for hybrids. It was part of about $3.4 billion Toyota said in October 2021 it would spend on US batteries through 2030.
Why it matters
The start of the largest Japanese battery project in the US, which grew with each later announcement.
The plan in 2021
The plant was to start with four production lines, each making batteries for 200,000 vehicles a year, with room for at least six. The 1,825-acre megasite has rail and Interstate 85 access, and the state put the average salary at $62,234, about 64% above the county average. A state job grant is paid only after Toyota meets yearly job and investment targets.
Why North Carolina
The state pointed to its lithium industry, including the largest known hard-rock lithium deposit in the US, more than 260 auto suppliers and a large factory workforce. Toyota named infrastructure, business climate, schools and workers as deciding factors.
