Toyota Research Institute, Toyota's Silicon Valley research arm, launched Toyota AI Ventures with an initial fund of $100 million. The fund invests in early-stage start-ups working on artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous driving and data. TRI's own release is dated July 12, 2017.
Why it matters
The fund gives Toyota a direct way to find and back early US technology for future cars and robots.
