Tokyo Century agreed to invest in NTT Global Data Centers' Chicago campus, planned at three data centers with 104MW of IT capacity, and run it jointly with NTT. In March its US unit bought 80% of the joint venture from NTT Global Data Centers Americas for $459 million, while NTT continues to manage the facilities.
Why it matters
Demand for data centers from cloud and generative AI is drawing Japanese lessors and financiers into US digital infrastructure as owners, while NTT recycles capital to fund its $10 billion-plus data center build-out.
The campus
The campus's first building, CH1, opened in 2021 with 36 MW of capacity across 126,000 square feet.
NTT's side
NTT DATA calls itself the world's third-largest colocation data center provider, not counting Chinese companies. The NTT group plans more than $10 billion of data center investment in fiscal 2023–2027, and selling a stake brings in outside money for that build-out.
What came next
Tokyo Century named data centers one of the main growth areas in its mid-term plan running to 2027. Later, JICT, a Japanese government-backed fund, agreed to invest about $340 million for a 30% stake in the joint venture as it expands. That cut Tokyo Century's share from 80% to 50%.
