Sumitomo Life is putting $900 million of new capital into Symetra, the U.S. insurer it bought in 2016. Together with a $650 million infusion in 2024, that brings its recent capital support for the unit to $1.55 billion. The money funds Symetra's acquisition of Dearborn Group's group life and disability block, agreed with Dearborn's parent HCSC in June 2025, and other corporate priorities.
Why it matters
The injection shows a Japanese life insurer using its U.S. platform to grow through bolt-on deals rather than new takeovers. Group benefits is one of the faster-growing parts of the U.S. life market.
What the money pays for
The main use is Symetra's purchase of Dearborn Group's life and disability business, which Symetra and Dearborn announced on June 30, 2025. The transfer was structured as a reinsurance transaction rather than a purchase of a legal entity. It covers group and individual life, accidental death and dismemberment, group short- and long-term disability, paid family and medical leave, and absence management. No purchase price was disclosed in the companies' releases.
The deal closed on October 1, 2025. Symetra said it expects the acquisition to lift its life and disability business to $1.1 billion of annualized premium and add 2.5 million covered lives. Nearly 450 Dearborn employees moved to Symetra. Sidley Austin advised Dearborn on the sale.
Distribution tie-up with HCSC
As part of the deal, Symetra and Dearborn's parent Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), a Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurer, signed an exclusive multi-year distribution agreement. Under it, Symetra's life and disability products are offered to HCSC's health care customers. Dearborn itself said it would focus on dental, vision and supplemental health after the sale.
Sumitomo Life's U.S. strategy
Sumitomo Life acquired Symetra in a deal valued at about $3.7 billion, completed in 2016. The 2024 injection of $650 million was aimed at growing Symetra's annuity business, according to Coverager, while the 2025 money is mainly for group benefits.
Kyodo reported in April 2026 that Sumitomo Life plans to spend up to ¥1 trillion over fiscal 2026 to 2028 on growth investment and returns to policyholders, and will step up mergers and acquisitions at home and abroad.
