Masayoshi Son appeared with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago to announce that SoftBank would invest $100 billion in US projects over the next four years, with a focus on artificial intelligence. The figure doubled the pledge Son made after Trump's 2016 win, and Trump publicly asked him to raise it to $200 billion.
Why it matters
The pledge set the tone for Japanese corporate engagement with the second Trump administration and foreshadowed SoftBank's lead role in the Stargate AI infrastructure push announced weeks later.
A repeat of 2016
After Trump's 2016 win, Son met him at Trump Tower and pledged $50 billion and 50,000 US jobs. This time he again promised jobs, about 100,000, along with the larger sum.
Stargate
On January 21, 2025, Trump announced Stargate, a venture of SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle and MGX to build AI data centers, starting with $100 billion and planning up to $500 billion over four years. Son became its chairman.
