At a White House event with President Trump, SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle and MGX announced Stargate, a new company that plans to invest $500 billion in U.S. AI infrastructure over four years, with $100 billion to be deployed immediately. SoftBank and OpenAI are the lead partners, with SoftBank holding financial responsibility and OpenAI operational responsibility; Masayoshi Son chairs the venture. Construction of the first data centers started in Texas. New sites In September 2025 the partners named five more U.S. sites, two of them developed by SoftBank in Lordstown, Ohio, and Milam County, Texas. The sites and SoftBank's purchase of the Lordstown plant from Foxconn are covered in separate entries. Delays and structure The joint venture has moved more slowly than announced. In August 2025, SoftBank CFO Yoshimitsu Goto acknowledged that Stargate was behind schedule, citing site selection and the time needed to coordinate many stakeholders. In late February 2026, The Information reported that the Stargate joint venture itself had hired no staff and was not developing data centers, after disputes among the partners over roles and control. It reported that OpenAI instead worked with Oracle and SoftBank through separate two-way deals. The companies declined to comment.
