SoftBank Group's Vision Fund led a $240 million Series C round in Brandless, a San Francisco online seller of low-priced everyday goods. Bloomberg put the valuation at a little over $500 million. Later reports said the money was paid in tranches, and Brandless shut down in 2020.
Why it matters
Brandless's closure two years later showed the risk in the Vision Fund's large investments in young US consumer brands.
