Shintech, the US unit of Shin-Etsu Chemical, said it would invest $1.49 billion in Plaquemine, Louisiana, to build a new chlor-alkali and vinyl chloride monomer plant and expand its PVC plant. The project was to create 120 new jobs.
Why it matters
Making its own feedstocks next to its PVC plant was intended to strengthen Shintech's cost position in the US, where low-cost shale gas supports chemical production.
Jobs and timeline
Besides the 120 new direct jobs, Shintech kept 500 existing jobs at its sites in West Baton Rouge and Iberville parishes, and construction was expected to employ up to 3,000 workers at its peak. The integrated PVC facility was expected to be finished in late 2020 and to begin operating in early 2021.
Shintech in Louisiana
Shintech has operated in Louisiana since 1999, with plants in Addis and Plaquemine. Governor John Bel Edwards said the company's total investment in the state would reach $6 billion. The state offered workforce training and a $1.5 million Modernization Tax Credit.
