Nissan said it would invest $500 million in its Canton, Mississippi, plant to build two all-new electric vehicles, one Nissan and one Infiniti, starting in 2025. The plant would also assemble battery packs. It was the first major EV production commitment for Nissan's U.S. factories.
Why it matters
The plan was Nissan's answer to U.S. EV demand and local-content pressure, but its slow retreat and final cancellation show how quickly the US EV case weakened for a carmaker under financial strain.
The 2022 plan
Chief operating officer Ashwani Gupta called Canton one of seven major Nissan investments in the US, and Nissan named the plant its center for US electric vehicle production. It said it would work with Accelerate Mississippi to retrain workers for the new materials and designs EVs need.
Pulling back
In April 2025 Nissan dropped two planned electric sedans and a smaller electric SUV and moved two electric crossovers to 2028. In July it delayed those again. In October, after the federal EV tax credit ended, Japanese media reported that Nissan had shelved the EVs and would study building hybrid SUVs at Canton instead.
No EVs at Canton
Nissan gave dealers and suppliers the final word in May 2026. "Canton does have a future that will include diverse powertrains, but it will not include EVs," a spokesperson said. The plant is expected to build a V6 hybrid version of the Xterra SUV, alongside the Frontier pickup and Altima sedan it already makes.
