Nipro's US unit, Nipro Medical Corporation, is building its first North American manufacturing center of excellence in Greenville, Pitt County, investing more than $397.8 million and creating 232 jobs. The 550,000-square-foot campus is to make devices for patients with diabetes and kidney disease and also house a training center and customer service operations. Nipro's reasons Tsuyoshi Yamazaki, a senior Nipro executive, said making devices in the US would give local hospitals and patients a steadier supply and lower shipping costs. Nipro also said shipping less across oceans would cut its carbon emissions. The campus will serve as its US headquarters as well. State support North Carolina approved a jobs grant worth up to about $2.5 million over 12 years, paid only if Nipro meets its hiring and investment targets. The new jobs were set to pay an average of $56,147 a year, above Pitt County's average of $50,937.
