At a special meeting on April 12, 2024, U.S. Steel stockholders backed the $55-per-share cash sale to Nippon Steel, with more than 98% of votes cast in favor. Nippon Steel restated pledges to keep U.S. Steel's name and Pittsburgh headquarters, honor union contracts, avoid layoffs and plant closures, and invest at least $1.4 billion in unionized facilities through 2026. The deal still faced CFIUS review and open opposition from President Biden. After the vote Nippon Steel vice chairman Takahiro Mori thanked shareholders and said the aim was to protect and grow U.S. Steel with more investment and Nippon Steel's technology. Later in 2024, Nippon Steel raised its investment pledges, but the union and both presidential candidates still opposed the deal.
