Mazda and Toyota chose Huntsville, Alabama, for a $1.6 billion joint-venture car plant, funded equally by the two companies. The plant was planned to build up to 300,000 vehicles a year and employ up to 4,000 people.
Why it matters
The joint plant gave both automakers new US production capacity at a time when Washington was pressing foreign carmakers to build more vehicles in the US.
Two lines under one roof
Each company was to run its own production line, splitting the 300,000-vehicle annual capacity evenly. Toyota planned to build the Corolla there, and Mazda a new crossover model for North America. The site is about 14 miles from Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama, Toyota's engine plant in the same city.
Start of production
The partners targeted the start of production by 2021. Toyota President Akio Toyoda said he was confident the plant would be highly competitive from 2021, and Alabama Governor Kay Ivey said the choice of Huntsville reflected the state's workforce.
