Kobayashi Pharmaceutical bought all of Focus Consumer Healthcare, a Chattanooga company founded in 2017 that sells over-the-counter medicines and supplements such as Garlique garlic pills, Pamprin period pain relief and Herpecin-L lip care through US drugstores and supermarkets. The price was $75 million, about ¥11.1 billion. Focus had sales of about $30.7 million in 2022. A small company Focus had only nine employees, and outside makers produced all of its products. It was owned by a private fund, Focus Consumer Healthcare Fund 1, and led by Kevin Menzel. Kobayashi paid about 2.4 times its yearly sales. Canaccord Genuity advised Focus. Kobayashi's US buying Kobayashi bought Berlin Industries in 2016 before Alva-Amco in 2020. With Focus it aimed to build a US supplement business for the first time, adding its own functional ingredients, formulas and marketing to the garlic and women's health brands.
