Connector maker JST will build a 540,000-square-foot plant on a 240-acre site in Guntersville, Alabama, where it has run a small operation since 2003. Molding, stamping, plating and cable assembly will all be automated with AI and robotics. The project adds 80 jobs to the 25 already on site, plus an engineering and sales building.
Why it matters
A heavily automated plant lets a mid-size Japanese supplier localize production for US automakers without depending on a large workforce, a template other parts makers facing tariffs may follow.
The site
The plant will go up in Conners Island Business Park, next to the 69,000-acre Lake Guntersville. Following a JST tradition, the building is designed to fit the natural setting. JST's Osaka-based architect, Ryuichi Ashizawa, is known for combining factory design with landscaping and conservation.
About JST
JST, founded in Osaka in 1957, runs 70 facilities in 17 countries. Its connectors go into cars, appliances, consumer electronics, medical equipment, robots and gaming machines. The small Guntersville operation supplied all the cable assemblies for the Las Vegas Sphere.
Why Alabama
It is JST's first major investment in the southeastern US. Alabama is home to car plants run by Mazda Toyota, Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai, along with their suppliers. JETRO noted that Japanese companies in North America list finding workers as a top problem, which is pushing them toward automation.
