At their summit at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Donald Trump agreed to start new talks on "free, fair and reciprocal" trade, led by Japan's economic revitalization minister Toshimitsu Motegi and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer. Japan had not been exempted from the US tariffs on steel and aluminum imposed in March 2018.
Why it matters
The talks set the framework in which Japanese companies weighed new US investment while US tariff threats, including on steel and cars, remained open.
