The 12 members of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, including Japan and the US, signed the agreement in Auckland, New Zealand. Shuichi Takatori, Japan's special envoy, signed for Japan. The US withdrew from the agreement in January 2017.
Why it matters
The agreement would have set common trade and investment rules between Japan and the US for the first time in a single regional pact. The US withdrawal a year later left bilateral talks as the main route for Japan-US trade issues.
