Isuzu Motors will build a new plant in Greenville County, South Carolina, to assemble N-series battery-electric and gas trucks and F-series diesel trucks. It plans to invest about $280 million, hire more than 700 people by 2028, and reach about 50,000 trucks a year by 2030.
Why it matters
Building trucks in the US puts production closer to US fleet customers and reduces the company's exposure to tariffs and shipping costs.
The site
Isuzu bought an existing 1-million-square-foot building on more than 200 acres along Augusta Road in Piedmont. It is spending 14 to 18 months refitting the building for production lines and clearing land to store finished trucks.
Moving production
The plant takes over North America-bound production from Isuzu's Fujisawa plant in Japan. Until it is ready, partner Shyft Group keeps assembling N-Series and F-Series trucks for Isuzu in Charlotte, Michigan.
Isuzu in North America
Isuzu entered the North American truck market in 1984 and sold a record 44,000 vehicles there in the year before the announcement. Chairman Masanori Katayama called North America its second-largest truck market after Japan.
