Dai Nippon Printing chose Linwood in Davidson County, North Carolina, for its first U.S. manufacturing plant, with North Carolina putting the investment at $233 million and about 350 jobs. The plant is to make the flexible pouches that wrap lithium-ion cells in electric vehicle batteries, starting with a slitting line, with DNP saying it would consider further expansion depending on demand.
Why it matters
DNP is a leading supplier of battery pouch film, and U.S. production puts it next to the wave of battery cell plants being built in the Southeast.
DNP's plan
DNP put its own budget at about ¥10 billion for the land and the first slitting line, which cuts large rolls of pouch film to size. If demand grows, it may also make the large rolls themselves on the same site. DNP says it has the top global share in battery pouch film, which it makes in Japan at Tobata in Fukuoka and Tsuruse in Saitama, and it slits film at a plant in Denmark.
Why now
DNP pointed to expected growth in US electric-vehicle demand under the Inflation Reduction Act and to battery makers building US supply chains. It aimed for about ¥100 billion in yearly battery pouch sales companywide by fiscal 2025.
